22nd December 2017, Friday – With Christmas round the corner, last Friday was a memorable technological experience for 26 underprivileged children from Glyph Singapore.
The Carrot Patch, alongside Glyph Singapore, hosted a technology showcase featuring cutting edge technologies from AIQ’s very own Artificial Intelligence (AI) Machine Vision Technology, to Internet-of-Things (IOT) and Virtual Reality (VR).
For many of the children present, this was their first encounter with the technologies set to change the world.
The event kicked off with a series of presentations and talks which explained the technology that powered these exciting phenomena. Despite the complex nature of the content, the children continually displayed their wit and keen sense of curiosity, posing insightful and thought provoking questions to the speakers. These presentations stoked the children’s curiosity even further, leaving them anxious to try out the technology for themselves.
What followed was undoubtedly the highlight of the afternoon. The space at The Carrot Patch became an area of exploration and discovery as the children embarked on a learning journey at stations located throughout our workspace.
At the station for AIQ’s machine vision technology the children were given the opportunity to use the scanning function in the AIQ app. They were wowed as the powerful AI rapidly and accurately scanned and captured whatever was placed before it, leading on to information pages, order forms and even an interactive game! After exhausting all the scanning samples provided, the children let their imagination take over, and soon discovered that even the Glyph logos on their shirts could be scanned!
Smart locks were all the rage at the IOT station. These locks were linked to a cloud network, allowing them to be remotely operated through a mobile phone, eliminating the need for keys or an external power source. The children tried their hand at operating these locks, witnessing the vast potential of IOT in their lives. Meanwhile, the cosy corner was transformed into a virtual playground; the children were transported to amazing and exotic locales via their VR headsets, right from the comfort of their plush bean bags.
The event was an extremely enriching one for all involved; most of all the children who received the chance to personally experience technology that some of them had never even heard off. They left with gifts, good memories, great experiences and most importantly having their interest in technology nurtured and grown.
Here at The Carrot Patch, we’re in the business of growing the minds that will shape our future. After the showcase, we can proudly say that the number of minds have increased by 26.
